The law that would have prevented 250,000 registered voters from casting their vote in Pennsylvania in the November election has been suspended.

Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson blocked the Republican backed law to require voters to bring photo identification in order to vote, on the grounds that it would cause voter disenfranchisement and the state would not be able to provide IDs to everyone who needed them before the presidential election.

On Tuesday, Simpson suspended the Pennsylvania measure until 2013.

This could drastically change the presidential race in favor of President Obama. Pennsylvania is a key battleground state and the law would have disproportionately kept minorities, poor people and students away from the polls.

According to ABC News:

On Nov. 6, election workers will still be allowed to ask voters for a valid photo ID, but people without it can use a regular voting machine in the polling place and will not have to cast a provisional ballot or prove their identity to election officials afterward, the judge ruled.
