It’s an election year, fabs!

Pop Quiz!

Do you know how many votes decided the 2000 Bush v. Gore election? 537 votes! This election could be just as close, with stakes that are even higher!

So at the invitation of our President – and with only 4 weeks left until the election – I hit the campaign trail to promote voting in Ohio and nationwide. In Ohio, they take democracy so seriously that they get to vote first. A key objective of my stint as a surrogate was to let everyone know that this was Golden Week, which means that Ohioans can both register and vote at the same time until October 9. So we took it to the streets!

From churches to universities, from community centers to performance halls, I put my stiletto to the ground in support of President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign. I attended a “pampering party” at Cleveland State University and spoke to women voters about the progress we’ve made under President Obama, canvassed the community to get out the vote and attended an early vote barbecue with the Mayor of East Cleveland, Gary Norton. I even hit the airwaves with WDBZ The Buzz’s PG Sittenfeld to discuss the power we all have at the polls. Later that night, I visited the Karamu House for the premiere of “The Color Purple” and met the entire cast before heading to Jezebel’s Bayou for an early voter’s networking reception. A full and fabulous day focused on issues that affect all of us!

I loved Cleveland because it felt thoroughly Midwestern and reminded me of my St. Louis, Missouri roots. Both towns and the region thrive under a strong middle class, which is why it’s so important to mobilize and vote in the upcoming election. On the trail, I spoke with volunteers, voters – anyone who would listen – about how we can’t move forward as a country or society without a strong middle class. And we can’t move forward as a community without using our voice.

Love and light,

KLS
