Last night I had the pleasure of dining with Stacey Dash. After dinner we went over to Bungalow 8, where we were joined by a whole bunch of very famous Hollywood liberals, much to my pleasure and to her discomfort. Everyone enjoyed beating her up about her support for “Money” Mitt Romney (and this was after I had already grilled her in the car.) I was baffled by how someone so smart could support a guy “who could care less about 47 percent of our country” – a guy who wants to turn the cabinet room into a board room and sell America off to his rich friends, while stashing their money in off-shore bank accounts. A guy who hasn’t told the truth to the American people about where he stands on the important issues, constantly erasing his Etch A Sketch depending on who is watching. A guy who will turn back equality for women, blacks, Latinos and gays. I could certainly go on and on, but let’s just say…”Money” Mitt works for the corporations. Stacey and I didn’t agree on much.
However, I was impressed by the way she held her own. She is smarter than most about the issues and she certainly has the right to have her opinion. She said my arguments were “all bullshit” and that 50 percent of America agrees with her. She thinks that tax breaks will entice the rich to invest in this economy and that privatizing the social services like healthcare, education and even social security will make it competitive, thereby making them more responsible. She also believes in the Second Amendment the way the NRA does. In fact, she showed me a picture of her in her hunting outfit, her gun and dead animal…it made me want to vomit. (remember, I am PETA’s Man of the Year.) In fact she is a true Republican in most every sense of the word. There was more that she explained to me and we had our debate in the car ride and I believe I won 🙂 but she didn’t.
Here’s my point: Being angry Progressives is equally as bad as being angry Conservatives. And I don’t support it. In fact, I admire her courage and I support her right to use her voice, even if I personally think her opinions are misguided and “bullshit.” I support Stacey’s right to have a different opinion, but I certainly don’t support “Money” Mitt. She didn’t change mine or anyone else’s opinion at the table, and we didn’t change hers, but I definitely believe she doesn’t deserve any of the racist attacks she has received on Twitter and Facebook. It is one thing to disagree with someone, but to attack that person with hatred, is flat out wrong.
Again, I applaud her courage for speaking out about what she believes in, even if “her 22-year-old son is pissed at her.” But she didn’t piss me off, she just inspired me to work harder to get Barack Obama re-elected!
Let’s let go of the hate and get out and vote!
