In conjunction with the 63-year-old rocker/actor Rick Springfield‘s new album Songs For The End Of The World dropping this week, Yahoo posted an article revolving around the song that launched Springfield’s career into superstardom, 1981’s “Jessie’s Girl.”

While the article only revealed the identity of “Jessie’s Girl” was still shrouded in music mystery, it did make a point of mentioning why the rock legend was inspired to make the famous hit.

In the article, it states:

“Springfield recounted the tale for Songfacts in 2009: “I don’t know her name… I was going to a stained glass class in Pasadena, and I met this guy and his girlfriend. I was completely turned on to his girlfriend, but she was just not interested. So I had a lot of sexual angst, and I went home and wrote a song about it. Then about four months later I stopped going to the class and lost contact with them. The only thing I remember is his name was Gary, so I changed the name, because ‘Gary’ didn’t sing very well. But the whole thing is absolutely what I was feeling. He was getting it and I wasn’t, and it was really tearing me up. And sexual angst is an amazing motivator to write a song.”

After hearing how the unrequited love story of “Jessie’s Girl” came about, GlobalGrind thought about how a few other girls’ stories came about, like Michael Jackson‘s “Billie Jean,” Tupac‘s “Brenda’s Got A Baby,” and Plain White T‘s “Hey There Delilah” just to name a few. While some are personal, others are impersonal; while some are simple, others are a little more complex.

That is why we decided to compile a list called, “Who Is She? Discovering The Mystery Girls Mentioned In Your Favorite Songs.”

Check it out below, and let us know what you think.

Plain White T’s “Hey There Delilah” was written by frontman Tom Higgenson after meeting Delilah DiCrescenzo, a nationally ranked steeplechase and cross country runner. Even though Tom never had a romantic relationship with Delilah, he did take her to the Grammy Awards in 2008, when the song was nominated for “Song Of The Year” and “Best Pop Performance” By a duo or group.

Drake’s “Bria’s Interlude” is supposedly about video model Bria Myles. He’s said, “I was smitten over this girl from L.A. and I started writing a song about her. A lot of the R&B [I do] is really based off women that come into my life and inspire me to speak to them in song and say what I never would expose on just a talking level.”

Tupac’s “Brenda’s Got A Baby” is reported to have been written after Pac read a newspaper article about a 12-year-old girl who was impregnated by her cousin, and because she did not want her parents to know about the baby, she threw the child in a trash can.

Fall Out Boy’s “She’s My Winona” has been speculated by fans to be a comparison of Wentz’s relationship with Ashlee Simpson to that of Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp, who were deeply involved in the early 1990s.

Lenny Kravitz’s “Flowers For Zoe” was written as a lullaby ode to his daughter Zoe Kravitz when she was just a baby.

Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” is about Caroline Kennedy of the Kennedy family. After performing the song for Caroline’s 50th birthday party, he told the Associated Press: “I’ve never discussed it with anybody before – intentionally. I thought maybe I would tell it to Caroline when I met her someday. I’m happy to have gotten it off my chest and to have expressed it to Caroline. I thought she might be embarrassed, but she seemed to be struck by it and really, really happy.”

Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” was rumored to be based off a real-life experience, in which a mentally ill female fan claimed that Jackson had fathered one of her twins, but MJ stated that the song is about the countless groupies he and his brothers had to deal with while part of “The Jackson 5” group.

Outkast’s “Ms. Jackson” was actually referring to Erykah Badu’s mom. Andre 3000 used to be in a relationship with Erykah Badu, which resulted in them having a son together named Seven.

Eminem’s “Kim” is about his ex-wife Kimberly Mathers (Kimberly Anne Scott). The two had a tumultuous relationship before they divorced in 2001, and again in 2006.

Justin Bieber’s “Maria” is inspired by a groupie named Mariah Yeater that claimed the pop star fathered her baby son Tristyn. Justin Bieber quickly ended the whole ordeal before it truly got out of hand.
