Welcome to the Weekend!

We hope that you enjoy every second of it! Just in case you don’t have anything planned, we have got some great things for you to do.  In this weekend’s installment of Dollars & Sense, we are focusing on some cool things to do in Istanbul, Turkey.  Check it out below.

Visit The Cartoon Museum
Set in a beautiful 17th-century medrese, this is one of the city’s more unusual museums. Where instructors once lectured students in Islamic philosophy, they now give lessons in illustration, engraving and screen-printing.
The permanent collection, with pieces dating back to the 1870s, illustrates the long-standing popularity of caricature and satire in Turkey. One of the most recurring themes is the insidious influence of the West.
Temporary exhibitions are devoted to Turkish and foreign cartoonists. The museum also hosts Turkey’s only humor library and an archive open to the public upon request.

Visit The Istanbul Modern
Created as Turkey’s equivalent of London’s Tate Modern, Istanbul Modern has grown comfortably into its role since opening in 2004. Housed in a former customs warehouse on the waterfront in Karaköy, the two-story museum has 26,200 square feet of exhibition space. The permanent collection follows the transformation of Turkish art since the foundation of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1893 and reflects Turkey’s shifting economic and political landscape.
While one of the museum’s galleries is dedicated exclusively to photography, another is devoted to video art and the galleries on the lower floor house temporary exhibitions. The in-house cinema screens an interesting mix of Turkish and international art-house movies and experimental shorts.
