A noticeable and worrying trend is happening across America. A man from California shot and killed his 34-year-old girlfriend in his home early Monday morning, because he mistakenly thought she was an intruder.

According to the Sacramento Bee:

The shooter fired at his girlfriend with a handgun around 5 a.m. in an upstairs bedroom of his house on the 200 block of Battle Creek Circle in Sacramento.

The woman sustained a bullet wound to her stomach.

Neither the suspect nor the victim has been identified by police.

Emergency dispatchers said the man called 911 just after 5 a.m. and stated that he had ‘just accidentally shot his girlfriend thinking she was an intruder.’

The victim was still breathing when officers arrived on the scene around 5:32 a.m., but she later died at the hospital. Her name will not be released until her family members have been notified of her death.

Homicide detectives are still investigating the boyfriend’s story, and the man has been cooperating with detectives, though he is very shaken up, police said.

Last week, a retired Chicago police officer mistakenly shot his own son after he thought he was an intruder. A Connecticut father also killed his son thinking he was a burglar three weeks ago.
