“George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”
Kanye’s words weren’t elegant. They were far from well spoken. As a matter of fact, I had a hard time figuring out what they hell he was actually trying to say, but I felt him. As incoherent as his words were, I felt ‘Ye 120 percent, because what Kanye West was saying was genuine and from the heart.
We can all look back and laugh at it now, but back then, Kanye’s incomplete sentences and unfinished thoughts summed up a voice of the people. “I’ve tried to turn away from the TV because it’s too hard to watch,” Yeezy said as a shocked Mike Myers looked on.
I feel the same way when I watch the 24-hour coverage of Hurricane Sandy, which is taking place in my backyard. Since Hurricane Sandy hit, New York has been at a stand still. In the city where you can get anything anytime, we’re having a hard time trying to find almost everything.
New York is crippled, but they are still trying to run a marathon.
I can’t help but wonder if there will be a Kanye moment. Sure, Ghostface Killah sent out a few tweets about Sandy and his devastated home on what is now considered New York’s Lower 9th Ward, Staten Island, but Ghostface is no Yeezy and his Twitter is not a nationally televised telethon for the world to see.

This time around, we thankfully have a president who knows what he’s doing, one who is in touch with the people, and all the things that could have been avoided during Katrina have pretty much been avoided for Sandy.
But with a mass transit system that usually serves 12 million people a day only moving a fraction of its usual load, New York is technically still moving on crutches. I’ll admit it; walking around, it felt like my home, the greatest place on Earth, was a third world country.

There must be a Kanye moment when someone speaks from the heart. When someone will throw all of the politically correct mumbo jumbo out the window and say what’s real. Say what needs to be said, even if the public is scared to say it.
So stop the marathon, figure out a way to turn the power back on now! Not tomorrow, not next week, but today! We need to start moving towards a better tomorrow, because the once in a lifetime storms are popping up way too often and I’m starting to feel like the government does not care about its people.
