The gas shortage in NYC and New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy has caused a huge uproar among residents.

The National Guard recently stepped up to the plate in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn where they gave out free gas to residents who waited up to 4 hours.

Governor Cuomo told the press in a media briefing this morning that he believes the gas shortage will last into this week, but that progress is currently being made. Although he is confident it is a short term problem Cuomo says it will continue for “a number of days.”

He said that the pipelines are running “up to an extent so there will be more supply of gas”. On the progress he says:

“That does not mean there will be a total alleviation of the problem in the immediate future. But it is getting better. We’re not 100% sure when the system will be up and running where you won’t feel any effect whatsoever.”
Although the gas shortage has stirred up a huge frenzy in the New York/New Jersey areas, the subways and trains are almost all up and running normally.

Governor said of transportation:

“Now is not the time to be using the car if you don’t need to. Now is not the time to be hoarding fuel.”
It sounds like New Yorkers  will have to stock up on metro cards for the next week or so.

Cuomo left the crowd with encouraging words, stating:

“If there is a silver lining in this truly tragic storm, it is to see new Yorkers come out and come together, it’s to see the spirit of community and the spirit of neighborliness. The nation knows New Yorkers as tough.  We are tough. But we’re also sweet and we’re also kind and we’re also generous and we’re also giving. And you can see that all across the state today”

The people of the East Coast are surely doing the best they can and uniting. Check out the gallery to see the National Guard in Bed-Stuy giving out gas.
