Mayor Michael Bloomberg has adopted an odd-even gasoline rationing mandate for New York City starting Friday morning in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, which ravaged the city last week.

Bloomberg said in a press conference earlier today:

“This is not a step we take lightly. But given gas shortages and the growing frustrations of New Yorkers, we believe it’s the right step.”

New Jersey has had a similar plan in effect for a week.

As reported by MyFoxNY:

All retail dealers of motor fuel will be required to only sell motor fuel for use in a passenger automobile bearing license plates, the last number of which is an even number or the number zero, on even-numbered days of each month.

On odd-numbered days of the month, sales will only be permitted to passenger automobiles bearing license plates ending in odd numbers or a character.

Commercial vehicles, emergency vehicles, buses and paratransit vehicles, MD plates and vehicles licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission are exempt from the rules.

And for those trying to get cute, Bloomberg said police officers will be on duty at every gas station in the city to enforce the emergency rules. So you can’t switch your license plate, as they will check registration and the sticker on your car!

Long Island, Nassau and Suffolk Counties will will begin to ration gas sales as of tomorrow at 5 am.
