Maison Martin Margiela may have been riding high after their highly publicized collaboration with Swedish fashion giant H&M, but you can leave it to Kidult to take a high fashion brand down a notch.

Out in Belgium, where Martin Margiela began, Kidult paid a visit to their Brussels store and got to work with his signature brand of fire extinguisher paint artwork.

Usually, Kidult fills a fire extinguisher with paint and sprays his name across a storefront, however this time around he may have had more time on his hands. The graffiti artist managed to paint a heart along with the word “Love” scrawled over it. Off to the right of the piece, Kidult tagged the line “OUR MISERY NOT YOURS.”

While some people may see this as art, others see it as vandalism. Kidult sees it as a protest against people using graffiti to promote a brand that has nothing to do with street artwork.

In a statement to Street Art Belgium, Kidult said:

“All these retail outlets have once used graffiti as a commercial tool to get more money and be “cool” without knowing anything about the culture. I didn’t simply say “hello” to them. If they really like graffiti, I just gave them what they love.”

Well. There you have it.

This seems like an excessive amount of damage for a protest of a type of art that has transcended culture for years. But to each his own. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
