Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. has officially resigned from his seat in the House of Representatives.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner has confirmed he received a letter of resignation from the son of Civil Rights leader Jesse Jackson. Jackson held his seat in the House for 17 years repping neighborhoods in Chicago including the South Side and was easily re-elected on November 6.
Illinois officials will hold a special election to replace Jackson within 115 days.
Because Jackson was accused of exploiting his campaign donations for personal use, which includes decorating his home in Washington, D.C., he was expected to resign as a part of his plea deal with the feds. He was also hospitalized multiple times this year after being diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and gastrointestinal issues.
Despite the allegations of fraud, Jackson was a great progressive leader that will truly be reached by his constituents in Chicago.
