He’s already hungry. Newark, NJ Cory Booker vowed to live off of food stamps for a week, but he didn’t anticipate how much of a struggle it would be.

DETAILS: Put Me In The Trenches With Cory Booker Anytime

Limited to $4.32 a meal ($30 for the week), Booker is holding up his end of a challenge proposed to him by a one of his followers on Twitter in a debate about the responsibility of government to provide food for its people. Booker, who seemed optimistic about the challenge, hopes to understand how families who live off of government assistance get by.

Booker started off his challenge by buying $27 worth of groceries to last him throughout the week, most of which were vegetable-based. Lettuce, canned corn and potatoes were the bulk of his purchases. On his blog, which he is using to document his experience, he wrote:

“The constrained food options I have for this one short week highlight for me (with the hunger pains I felt today between small meals) what many hardworking families have to deal with week after week.”

“Not being able to stop and drop a few dollars for a Venti coffee or Diet Mountain Dew is really raising my consciousness about the food choices I often take for granted.”

But not having a coffee isn’t stopping Booker from being the “super” mayor he is. Already infamous for running into a burning house to rescue his neighbor back in April, Booker made news again today when he rushed to aid victims of a car accident near his home. Guess that vegetable diet is actually working for him…but let’s see if he can last until next Tuesday without breaking and buying some steak, which is NOT in his food stamp budget.
