In the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary school massacre, dozens of individuals gathered in front of the White House with candles to first remember the victims of yesterday’s tragic event, but also to plead with President Barack Obama to push gun-control agenda.

Activists, sympathetic parents, children and those in mourning chanted and begged the White House to take politcal action in the wake of the latest episode of gun violence.

Taking part in the vigil was Jon Carson, Obama’s director of the Office of Public Engagement:

He told The Huffington Post that he had a 4-year-old and had stepped out to take in the scene of the Sandy Hook vigil. Several progressive advocates, including those pushing for the president to tackle gun control legislation, were pleased with his presence there.

In Connecticut hundreds gathered for spontaneous candlelight vigils to pay their respects to those that lost their lives. Approximately 1,000 mothers, fathers, children, and grandparents flocked to St. Rose of Lima Catholic church to lay flowers, balloons and letters at the nativity scene. The church, which only had space for 500, was overfilled with mourners as Monsenior Weiss led the congregation into prayer. The congregation lost six children during yesterday’s shooting.

Other vigils in the areas around Newtown show emotional families grieving over the loss of innocent lives.
