Tragedy struck yesterday as 26 innocent victims were shot dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Adam Lanza, the alleged shooter shot and killed his own mother in her home before getting in her car and driving to the nearby elementary school. There he took the lives of 20 children, all between the ages of 5 and 10, six adults and then himself.

According to CBS, Connecticut State Police have released the names of the 26 victims. All 20 of the children who were killed were ages 6 and 7and among them were 8 boys and 12 girls. The victims’ names and ages are:

Mary Sherlach (school psychologist), 56

Victoria Soto (first grade teacher), 27

Charlotte Bacon, 6

Daniel Barden, 7

Rachel Davino, 29

Olivia Engel, 6

Josephine Gay, 7

Ana M. Marquez-Greene, 6

Dylan Hockley, 6

Madeline F. Hsu, 6

Catherine V Hubbard, 6

Chase Kowalski, 7

Jesse Lewis, 6

James Mattioli, 6

Grace McDonnell, 7

Anne Marie Murphy, 52

Emile Parker, 6

As we remember the victims, it is also clear that there a number of heroes as well. First grade teacher, Victoria Soto threw herself in front of her first grade students to protect them from Lanza. Although those students witnessed their teacher, who they adored, tragically shot in front of them, they were able to run out of the room and survived.
