A 11-year-old student reportedly brought a handgun into his West Kearns Elementary school in Utah for protection.

DETAILS: Say What?! Gun Sales Go Up Across U.S. After Mass Shooting

In the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, the student said that the weapon was given to him by his parents in order to protect himself.

The sixth grader was caught when he showed the unloaded .22-caliber pistol to his classmates during recess.

“[He] pulled it out of his backpack during recess yesterday and aimed it at another student. “He pointed a gun to my head and said he was going to kill me,” Isabel Rios told a local Fox affiliate.

A teacher disarmed the boy and rushed him to the principal’s office. No lockdown was ordered at the school, but police were called.

An investigation into the boy’s statement is ongoing and currently the boy is in the custody of a juvenile hall and could face criminal charges and expulsion from school.

It seems we can’t catch a break from gun-violence in light of last week’s mass shooting. But what’s most disheartening is that a little boy, and maybe his parents, are under the impression that a gun is needed to feel safe in school.

What have we done to get there?
