Last Thursday, college student Joshua Proutey, 19, was robbed and killed over two $5 bills, a sandwich and a cell phone while walking in the downtown area of Wilmington, North Carolina.

Four people were arrested this week for his death: Christopher Daniel Cromartie Jr., 23, Quintel Raheem Grady, 22, Jasmine Nikole Dottin, 19, and Daniel Edward Henry, 17. They have been charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit a robbery with a dangerous weapon.

The quad of individuals had hatched a plan to rob victims the night of the killing, said District Attorney Ben David. According to authorities, Cromartie, Henry and Dottin attempted to break into a home in a North Carolina neighborhood, but the plan was thwarted when the owners were alerted.

Grady, 22, met up with the group after their first attempt.

“The four of them hatched a plot to go downtown to find a victim or victims to rob. (Cromartie), together with Daniel Henry and Quintel Grady, got out of a car being operated by Jasmine Dottin and stalked and followed a woman in the downtown area. She understood she was being stalked, went into her gated yard and began to call 911, but did not. They left her. This was about 20 minutes before Joshua Proutey was shot and killed,” David said.

After targeting Proutey, Grady approached the Cape Fear Community College student and demanded his wallet and anything of value.

“Mr. Proutey produced what was in his wallet, which was $10, and asked if he could keep his ID because it would be hard to replace. At that point he was ordered back into his car and he froze. And it’s alleged that Mr. Grady shot him in the head and killed him.”

The group then fled, taking Proutey’s cash, cell phone and sandwich. They put the $10 in the tank of the car.

In North Carolina, first-degree murder is punishable by death. Because of this, judge Rebecca Blackmore granted David’s request to hold the suspects without bail. Henry, who is 17 years old, is not eligible for the death penalty. His bond was set at $2 million.

We pray for the family of Proutey, and pray for the crack-down of guns in our society. From a small town in North Carolina to Newtown, the senseless gun violence has got to stop!
