President Barack Obama has signed the long-awaited fiscal bill into law, according to CNN.

Just a day after the House and the Senate approved of the bill, Obama signed it via a nifty device called an autopen on Wednesday night.

The autopen is a tool that mimics the president’s signature and is more commonly used to sign Christmas cards and letters. It is the first time the Obama administration has used the device, but with the president joining his family in Hawaii to catch up on the missed holiday time, the White House decided that the pen was the best solution.

How futuristic!

The new law maintains tax cuts for individuals earning less than $400,000 per year and couples making less than $450,000. As promised, the bill will raise tax rates for those who make more and it also extends unemployment insurance and delays two months of automatic cuts in federal spending.

We know he had to make some concessions to get the bill through, but he did it without compromising the most important issues. Congratulations President Obama!

Note: The Justice Department determined in 2005 that the word “sign” does not necessarily mean an active signature by the president himself. Rather, the Justice Department stated, “a person may sign a document by directing that his signature be affixed to it by another.”
