We bet Kanye and Rihanna would beg to differ with Azealia Banks when she says that getting wrapped up in the fashion world isn’t a blessing.

The Harlem native rapper, who came on the scene with her smash hit “212” last year, has gained a mass of attention in the music realm due in part to the fashion world embracing her.

The spitfire rapper, known for stirring up a plethora of controversy with her music industry peers, broke when Kanye West noted her talents, saying she would be the next big thing. And when Kanye talks, fashion people kind of listen. Next thing we know, Azealia was red carpet at the MET Gala alongside Alexander Wang, having a MAC lipstick named after her, and starring in an ASOS ad campaign. But it turns out she doesn’t think the fashion world is all it’s cracked up to be.

In an interview with HYPETRACK, a shockingly soft-spoken Azealia made it clear that her feelings about being the fashion world’s “Darling” were not mutual:

I think that too much fashion attention as an artist can actually smother you, and it can really really distract from your music. I kind of almost got there with it where it was just fashion, fashion, fashion. I was like this fashion darling. I was putting out records and the only record that anyone would listen to was ’212′ and that was the only Azealia Banks record that anyone knew.

I think that fashion and style is one thing but I definitely think that branding can definitely hurt you as an artist, especially if it’s not real. If it’s not something that you really like. Like, I really like Alexander Wang and I really shop at ASOS, so it makes sense but you can very easily get sucked up by the fashion world, because they bring artists in to kind of make themselves look a certain way, and as soon as someone new comes out, they’ve completely forgotten about you. They’re so fickle. They’ve completely forgotten about you and completely disregarded you. If you place your faith in the fashion world, you will get let down as an artist you absolutely will get let down, so it’s very, very important to remember what you’re here for.

We hate to admit it, but the girl may have a solid point. Check out the full interview in the video above.
