“She’s deader than Caylee Anthony.”

Michael Nodianos, an 18-year-old student at Ohio State University, giggles as he describes the victim of an apparent rape in August of 2012.

“That’s childish,” another voice said to Nodianos as he laughed, cheeks turning red. “That’s like rape. It is rape. They raped her.”

As another person in the room declared that it was the “funniest thing ever,” Nodianos took a sip from a McDonald’s cup and replied:

“She’s deader than Trayvon Martin.”

The people in the room laughed, but the voice of reason broke through the giggles again.

“What if that was your daughter?”

Nodianos turned to the person.

“But it’s not. If that was my daughter I wouldn’t care, I would just let her be dead.”

He then took to Twitter that night:

“Some people deserve to be peed on.”

Now almost five months after the Steubenville, Ohio high school rape case took place, Nodianos is singing his apologies for being insensitive.

As the case gains traction and the residents of Steubenville bear witness to the previously unpublicized details of the case, the nation is starting to realize just how trivial the allegations seemed to the small football town.

It wasn’t until the hacker group Anonymous took on the case and released various photos and videos, including Nodianos’, that the case garnered national attention. And after almost half a year after the alleged rape took place, the horrifying details of the case are no longer hidden.

For Nodianos, that means his laughing fit about the rape is no longer an inside joke.

Dennis McNamara, the attorney for the college athlete, spoke at a press conference on behalf of his client, saying that his behavior was “disappointing, insensitive, and unfortunate.”

In an attempt to distance Nodianos from the crime, McNamara said:

“After some sober reflection he is ashamed and embarrassed of himself. He’s sorry to victims and his family. He was not raised to act in this manner.”

Since the video was released, Nodianos has dropped out of Ohio State University (where he was on athletic scholarship) after receiving numerous threats.

To the dismay of protestors and activists who want charges to come to those who attended the three parties where the victim was allegedly carried back and forth while being sexually assaulted, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said that no further suspects would be charged in the rape.

Abdalla, who said he first saw the video three days ago, commented: “It’s a disgusting video. It’s stupidity. But you can’t arrest somebody for being stupid.”

The town still stands divided. Over the weekend, demonstrators gathered to call for the arrests and a re-evaluation of the case, which they believe was covered up to protect the name of the town’s beloved high school football team (which both suspects in the case play for). But defenders of the case are calling for the trial to be moved to a different town to give the suspects a fighting chance:

Lawyer Walter Madison wants to move the trial to a different town because activists simply want to draw blood and have less concern for what is truly justified.

The victim, an unidentified teenage girl, has yet to speak out.

Is Michael Nodianos sorry now that his comments have come to light? Would he be sorry if the video had stayed under wraps? Is this what society thinks of rape?

It’s hard to say what the fate of this case will be, but with a town divided, compelling evidence and the alleged cover-up of the rape, we will be keeping an eye out to make sure justice is served.
