National Geographic Magazine has many prolific pictures that are published in their magazine all the time, however once a year, the experienced natural history and documentary photographers get together to decide who took the picture of the year.
Photographers have the opportunity to win $10,000 and a trip to National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual National Geographic Photography Seminar.

According to National Geographic, photographers from at least 150 countries submitted more than 22,000 photos to the contest. This year, photographer Ashley Vincent of Chonburi, Thailand took home the top honor for her photo of a tigress named Busaba shaking herself dry at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand.

Though Ashley Vincent won the grand prize, National Geographic recognized winners in other categories, including first place and viewer’s choice for “People” and “Places,” along with several honorable mentions.
