As most of us know, Beyonce just graced the cover of GQ’s latest issue and it was one of her sexiest spreads to date. But apparently some critics are not feeling it.

In the photos, Bey is pictured in several shots flaunting her bod in sexy underwear and cropped tees that give you a peek at her lady lumps – alongside an interview where she states her disapproval that women are still getting unequal pay.

To be exact, she says:

“Equality is a myth, and for some reason everyone accepts that women don’t make as much money as men do. I truly believe that women should be financially independent from their men. And let’s face it; money gives men the power to run the show. It gives men the power to define value. They define what’s sexy. And men define what’s feminine. It’s ridiculous.”

In response to the mag’s piece, the UK Guardian decided to post an article titled “Beyoncé: being photographed in your underwear doesn’t help feminism” by an author named Hadley Freeman. The basis of the article is attempting to point out that Beyonce’s spread is simply reducing her to a sexual object and contradicting her very belief in girl power.

But is it really?

Freeman writes:

I never fail to be amazed at the high profile, often A-list women who celebrate their professional success by posing near naked on the covers of allegedly classy men’s magazines, such as Esquire and GQ, and these covers are, to my eyes, becoming increasingly close to porn. […] It’s one thing to submit to this attention-seeking nonsense if you’re a C-list reality TV desperado trying to get on the cover of Nuts; it’s another if you are professedly one of the most powerful women in the entertainment business who has no need of such tactics. Knowles rightly hates the fact that women are humiliated by being paid less than their male counterparts. But they are similarly humiliated by being fed the message that it doesn’t matter how successful, powerful or smart you are – all that matters is how sexually available you are willing to make yourself look.

I just grabbed my copy of the magazine and took another look. “Close to porn?” Please!

The whole article simply saddens me. For one, while the author might think they are looking out for the good of feminism, on the contrary, the point being made is actually quite anti-feminist if you ask me.

Beyonce is undoubtedly the hardest working woman in entertainment. I can go on for days listing the woman’s accomplishments, but as much as I want to, in the interest of saving your time I would just like to pose one question.

Because Beyonce is a hard working female professional, does that automatically strip her of her right to flaunt her post Blue Ivy bod in some sexy underwear and seduce the camera?

It has always concerned me that some put women in only two categories. It’s as if women have only two options when it comes to life. XX chromosome? Yup, you can only either be Superhead or Condoleezza Rice.

Wrong! That my friends is not feminism at all.

We are now in 2013. Have the views of women in our society not expanded by now? Young girls and women need to know they don’t only have two options in life. You can be superwoman and you can have sex appeal without being ashamed of it.

Judging from this article, you would think Beyonce was busting it wide open on every magazine she’s ever covered, and what saddens me most of all is that the author of this article is also a woman.

Freeman even labels Beyonce’s statement, “I’m more powerful than my mind can even digest” as narcissism.

I thought that statement was actually an example of some self-empowerment we all should take into practice.

The fact that Beyonce does work her ass off, has popped out a baby, is a wife, kept her career going and can still make us drool actually makes her a perfect role model for feminists. She is an example that you can be sexy and powerful “at the same damn time!”

Lastly, I would just like ladies all across the globe to know: you have options. Be as sexy or as prude as you wanna be! And… f*ck the haters!
