On Monday, President Barack Obama honored the Miami Heat for winning the 2012 NBA Championship. And in true Obama fashion, he jokingly told them that they only won because they had already played him in an pick-up game of basketball on his birthday!

“Going up against me prepared them,” Obama said.

The Heat defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games in the NBA Finals last June.

He continued the lighthearted bantering, talking about Dwyane Wade’s GQ spread and calling Dwight Howard “Grandpa.”

But he also touched on each team member’s strength and what got them to this point.

“Everybody doing their part, is what finally put the Heat over the top,” Obama said, as he welcomed the team to the White House Monday to celebrate their victory.

Obama said one of the things he’s proudest of is that many of the team members, including LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, “take their roles as fathers seriously.”

“For all the young men out there who are looking up to them all the time, for them to see somebody who cares about their kids and is there for them day in and day out, that’s a good message to send,” Obama said.

When LeBron James nervously stepped to the microphone and said “Am I supposed to say something,” the President responded:

“You can if you want! It’s your world man!”

James then replied:

“We’re in the White House right now, which is like, like ‘mama I made it.'”

Coach Erik Spoelstra spoke to the crowd, which included Gabrielle Union, after the President lent one last joke.

“And now we’re going to take a picture that makes me look really short!”

Hilarious!
