Kerry Washington and Scandal returns tonight, and it seems like the hit show is leading a change in America.

If you haven’t watched, Kerry Washington plays Olivia Pope, a lawyer who specializes on fixing problems. Only thing is, she fell in love with the President of The United States. President Fitz, if you’re nasty.

Scandalous, right? Even more scandalous when you see them have sex in the Oval Office. Even more scandalous when you consider President Fitz is married, and even more scandalous when no one cares that Olivia Pope is black and the President is white.

But some people do.

Star Jones called Olivia Pope a whore and then asked the show’s creator why she’s with the white married president and not the brother on the show.

We love who we love and while I would hate it for my wife to cheat on me, if I had a wife, I do understand that stuff happens. The fire dies and people’s feelings change.

But what I do find amazing about the show is that there is an interracial relationship being shown and it’s not really a big issue. People love the show, and most people don’t even care that Liv got herself a white man.

Jungle Fever is spreading like wildfire. Lena Dunham’s character Hannah on HBO’s GIRLS kicked off the season by riding a black dude.

Sure, he happened to be a rapper in real life, but one stereotype at a time.

We live in a different America, a bit more tolerant to interracial couples. Long gone are the days of Tom and Helen on The Jeffersons, getting called names and clowned for their love. The character’s name Tom even implies Uncle Tom, but hey, times were different.

This brings me to my point that some people still live in box where they can only see their brothers and sisters with their brothers in sisters.

Luckily those people are in the minority. Those people are dwindling and those people are becoming less and less thanks to the efforts of Hollywood. They are shaping a better tomorrow … now if we could just get a relationship that’s not so scandalous.

Do you think television has the power to change social norms and influence the masses, or is it just a reflection of the time? Let’s discuss this.
