On March 3, 1931, the United States’ president at the time, Herbert Hoover, signed an act that made “The Star Spangled Banner” our country’s National Anthem. Since then, it’s been the song we sing at every sporting event or political shindig.

Why eff with perfection, right?

DETAILS: Bonnaroo 2013 Lineup: Paul McCartney, R.Kelly, A$AP Rocky, The Lumineers, & More To Perform

Well, January 22nd marked the 10-year anniversary of R.Kelly’s massive hit “Ignition (Remix).” (Sweet Jesus, we’re old.) To celebrate the occasion, a number of rabid R.Kelly fans started a petition to make the iconic party song the new National Anthem.

The group has officially filed the petition on the White House’s website and there’s already more than 5,000 signatures.

If the group reaches 100,000 signatures, the White House has to respond. However, the White House has ignored silly ones in the past.

MUSIC: R.Kelly “I Know You’re Hurting (Tribute To Newtown, CT Kids)”

This one isn’t silly though, and those who started the petition make a compelling argument:

“We, the undersigned, would like the Obama administration to recognize the need for a new national anthem, one that even a decade after its creation, is still hot and fresh out the kitchen. America has changed since Francis Scott Key penned our current anthem in 1814. Since then, we have realized that after the show, it’s the afterparty, and that after the party, it’s the hotel lobby, and–perhaps most importantly–that ’round about four, you’ve got to clear the lobby, at which point it’s strongly recommended that you take it to the room and freak somebody. President Obama: we ask you to recognize the evolution of this beautiful country and give us an anthem that better suits the glorious nation we have become.”

OK, this is a silly, and the argument isn’t compelling. But whatever.

If you’re feeling it, sign the damn thing; you have until April 2nd to do so.
