White smoke! Who Is The New Pope?!

On Tuesday after a few false alarms, Roman Catholic cardinals finally reached a decision on who the new Pope would be, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina.

The new Pope will go by the name Pope Francis. The Argentinian is the first non-European Pope in history and is 76-years-old.

The papal conclave convened this morning with the world watching the little chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel, waiting for the billowing white smoke that would indicate a new pope was chosen.

In Vatican City, black smoke confused watchers, but then the white smoke started spilling out of the chimney around 7:00 PM CET.

Bergoglio greeted the crowd with a prayer in Vatican City about an hour after the white smoke appeared. After his speech, where he called for the world to set off on a path of love and fraternity, he sent his first tweet:

But even though it’s official, the new Pope Francis won’t be moving into the papal apartment just yet. According to Associated Press, he will remain with cardinals at the Vatican’s Santa Marta hotel and will spend his first night as pontiff in a room that features a bed with a dark wood headboard and a carved image of Christ’s face.

The new pope is expected to stay there for a few weeks until the papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace can be renovated. The apartment was sealed Feb. 28, just after Benedict resigned, and cannot be reopened until the new pope formally takes possession.

    This story is developing.
