UPDATE: 4:45 PM EST

It is being reported that CNN and MSNBC also aired the name of the underage victim in the Steubenville rape trial.

An earlier report specified that Fox News anchor Mike Tobin acted alone in releasing the 16-year-old’s name.

According to HuffPost:

All three cable news networks aired a clip of one of the defendants, Trent Mays, apologizing to the victim in the courtroom. Mays had addressed the victim by name, which was not censored during CNN and MSNBC’s broadcasts on Sunday and Fox News’ broadcast on Monday. Local CBS affiliate WTRF also aired the clip without editing the victim’s name out.

This story is developing.

CNN, move over. There’s another news network coming under fire for their Steubenville rape trial coverage.

After months of media omitting the name of the underaged victim in the Steubenville rape case to protect her, a Fox News anchor made a big “oops!” when he revealed her identity during a television report.

On Monday, Fox News correspondent Mike Tobin was on the scene in Steubenville when he cut to a clip of one of the defendants, Trent Mays, apologizing to the victim. Mays had addressed the victim by name, which was not censored during the broadcast.

“I would truly like to apologize to [redacted], her family, my family and the community,” Mays said. “No picture should have been sent around, let alone even taken.”

The National Alliance to End Sexual Violence encourages news outlets not to publish the names of minors alleging sexual abuse or rape, but Tobin must have missed that message.

Earlier, FoxNews.com had redacted the victim’s name in an Associated Press report about the Steubenville trial, saying in an editor’s note, “The Associated Press named the minors charged due to the fact they have been identified in other news coverage and their names were used in open court. FoxNews.com will not name the defendants.”

Let’s hope ratings were low during that segment.
