Turns out the undercover New York Police Department (NYPD) officers that shot and killed 16-year-old Kimani Gray aren’t strangers to trouble.

The officers, who have now been identified as Sgt. Mourad Mourad and Jovaniel Cordova, have been sued previously for alleged civil rights violations related to other encounters with the public.

To settle the three lawsuits agains Mourad and the two against Cordova, the city has shelled out $215,000.

The news comes as the city goes to court for their controversial “stop-and-frisk” procedure, which critics say is unnecessary and racist due to the fact NYPD targets mostly hispanic and black subjects.

Turns out, the civil rights lawsuits against Mourad and Cordova were filed by people who claimed they were illegally stopped and roughed up under that same program, where officers confront people they suspect might be carrying weapons.

A lawyer for the city’s law department said the settlements did not indicate the officers were out of line. The two officers generally police dangerous high crime areas.

“None of these civil claims were tried, and the officers were not found to have engaged in any wrongdoing,” said city lawyer Muriel Goode-Trufant. “The decision to settle should not be held against them.”

Could this bit of information indicate that the officers were wrong in the fatal shooting of the Brooklyn teen?

This story is developing.
