Growing up in major metropolitan areas get you pretty used to street signs.
Stop, Yield, Parking Regulations and just about anything else that regulates both foot and car traffic have become so run-of-the-mill, you end up blocking them out without thinking much about it. Graphic designer and avid hip-hop head Jay Shells is trying to change that.
In a recent “Rap Quotes” project in collaboration with ANIMAL, Jay Shells created several street signs based on verses from Mos Def (aka Yasiin Bey), Jay-Z and Big L, among others. Each sign corresponds with an address or cross street used in a verse from each artist. For example, Mos Def’s line “I’m blacker than midnight on Broadway and Myrtle” from his song “Mathematics” became a sign that got posted on – you guessed it – Broadway and Myrtle in Brooklyn.
The project took Jay Shells all over New York and you can tell he had a blast doing it. Check out Jay Shells’ “Rap Quotes” project come to fruition by pressing play on the video above.
