Hedi Slimane will probably be sticking around for a little while.

Although he was greeted with some really terrible reviews for his first collection after taking over as creative director for Saint Laurent, Hedi is having the last laugh.

In an interview with the New York Times, Slimane “expected” the reviews would be “dreadful,” however according to reports from stores that carry the collection, the public obviously didn’t feel the same way.

The Times reports that 60 percent of Barneys’ spring order had sold at full price as of last week. Certain jacket styles – like the leather perfectos – are doing so well at retail, that pricepoints are being raised for next season.

According to an insider from Hedi’s camp, he “is less interested in critical opinion than what is happening with styles among the youth culture of Los Angeles.” That authenticity to the culture seems to have worked in Hedi’s favor.

Saint Laurent’s Fall 2013 show was the second most viewed collection on Style.com and according to NYT, the house had not managed to get into the top 10 – let alone the top five – most-viewed collections before Hedi was appointed.

Additionally, under the brand’s last designer, Stefano Pilati, the house was largely unprofitable. YSL didn’t make a “substantial profit” until 2010, six years into Pilati’s tenure. Hedi’s clothes, on the other hand, have not been able to stay on shelves.

Take that critics! Looks like Hedi will be with Saint Laurent for a little while.
