Earlier, we reported that Apple was releasing a new iPhone this summer. Now we’re hearing that not only is it coming out, but it’s also going to be a whole lot cheaper.

In a recent phone interview, Apple CEO Tim Cook made a rare comment divulging what we can expect from his company later this year, “I’m just saying we’ve got some really great stuff coming in the fall and all across 2013.”

Based on that comment and the rest of the highly tight-lipped conversation, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, one of the premier Apple analysts, predicts that a cheaper iPhone is in fact in the works.

On the possibility that Apple will release a cheaper phone:

“I think so. I don’t know if it’s June or September quarter. There is a cheaper phone coming. It is a huge opportunity for them, kind of low end market. But that doesn’t play into Tim Cook’s ‘new product category’ comment.”

On these ‘new product categories’, such as iWatch, iTV:

“I think it’s both of them. They clearly wanna do more in TV. When we talked to other players in the TV industry, they’re convinced Apple is going to do something there. But timing has always been the question. This is the first time they’ve talked about ‘new product categories’. We know the least about this, but they have hired the wearable technology guy from Motorola about a hear and a half ago.”

On upgrading to a larger display screen:

Bloomberg’s Jon Erlichman says –

“Some of [Apple’s] competitors have delivered bigger displays and made trade offs along the way. [They] would not make those trade offs to deliver a bigger display.”

Munster says –

“In the next 3-6 months, it’s less than 50% likely. In the next 6-9 months, it’s 90% likely. They’re getting killed in Asia in the larger form factor. Women tend to like the existing iPhone 5s. Guys tend to like it a little bit bigger. That’s 20% of the market share that they don’t have.”

Wearable technology made by Apple? More sleek and sexy accessories to add to our arsenal? Yes please!
