The Amy Winehouse documentary is finally in the works, officially – something fans of the late legend have been hoping for and waiting on.

Her family has found a director that can sincerely tell, not only the story of Amy’s downfall and death, but the story of Amy’s inspirational life as it was.

Senna director, Asif Kapadia, and producer, James Gay-Rees, won the family over with a vision that would “look at Amy’s story sensitively, honestly and without sensationalizing her.”

Kapadia and Gay-Rees have this to say about the upcoming film:

“This is an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in in a way that very few films can.

Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone’s attention; she wrote and sung from the heart, and everyone fell under her spell. But tragically, Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle. As a society we celebrated her huge success, but then we were quick to judge her failings when it suited us.”

Backed by Universal Music and a division within the empire – Focus Features International – Kapadia, Gay-Rees and the companies will team up to tell Amy’s story and it will definitely be one that is always remembered.

They’ll begin shopping the project to foreign buyers at the Cannes Film Market next month!
