It’s been 11 days since Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev allegedly detonated two pressure cooker bombs at the Boston Marathon; an act of terror that killed three and injured more than 200.

Since last Monday, authorities have shut down and reopened the city of Boston, engaged in a shootout with the Tsarnaev brothers, captured the youngest of the two (who was hiding in a boat), and charged him with using a weapon of mass destruction.

Other details about Dzhokar, also known as Jahar, and his brother’s religious beliefs have come to light as well; details that will no doubt aid in building the case against the alleged bombers.

Here are the latest updates in the ongoing case.

1. Bombers Planned On Hitting NYC’s Times Square

According to NBC, the Tsarnaev brothers were discussing going to NYC to detonate explosives in Times Square. Today, New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, confirmed those reports during a press conference.

“Boston Marathon bombing suspects intended to drive to NY and set off bombs in Times Square,” he said. “We don’t know if we would’ve been able to stop the Boston terrorists, we’re thankful we didn’t have to find out.”

He also added after he heard about the Boston bombings, he immediately deployed law enforcement to secure the city.

2. Mom Speaks Out Again

The mother of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects is traveling to the U.S. with her ex-husband, where she plans to defend her son, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva spoke out yesterday to the media about why she believes the U.S. framed her sons.

“You know what I think? I think now they will try to make my Dzhokhar guilty because they took away his voice, his ability to talk to the world… They did not want the truth to come out,” she said.

She added that the only reason her sons were targeted was because they were Muslim, adding that she saw footage of Tamerlan being killed “really cruelly.”

Reportedly, Tsarnaeva is so distraught that she is unable to eat solid foods. She also went into a rant and said this:

“If they are going to kill him, I don’t care,” she told CNN of Dzhokhar. “My oldest one is killed, so I don’t care. I don’t care is my youngest one is going to be killed today. I want the world to hear this. And I don’t care if I am going to get killed too. And I will say Allahu akbar!”

3. Bombers Used Remote Control To Detonate Bombs

According to investigators, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan allegedly used a kind of remote device used to control toy cars in order to detonate the bombs at the Boston Marathon.

“It was a remote control for toy cars,” U.S. Representative Dutch Ruppersberger, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told reporters after officials from the Department of Homeland Security, FBI and National Center for Counterterrorism briefed the committee.

“Which says to me, and brother number two has said, they got the information on how to build the bomb from Inspire magazine,” Ruppersberger added.

Ruppersberger also confirmed that at least some of the explosives used in the attack had come from a fireworks shop in New Hampshire.

4. Tamerlan Was On Terrorist Watch Lists

Almost 20 months before the Boston bombings, members of the CIA requested that Tamerlan Tsarnaev be placed on a terrorist watch list.

Russia raised red flags about Tamerlan and the CIA gave warnings to the FBI, Homeland Security, The State Department and the National Counterterrorism Center.

5. Dzhokhar was UNARMED When Captured

Turns out, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was actually unarmed when he was captured in a boat last Friday. Two U.S. officials say the suspect was unarmed, although they originally said they exchanged gunfire with Dzhokhar as he hid inside the boat in a neighborhood backyard.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation, say investigators recovered a 9 mm handgun believed to have been used by Tsarnaev’s brother, Tamerlan, from the site of a gun battle Thursday night, which injured a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority officer. Dzhokhar was believed to have been shot before he escaped.

6. Tamerlan’s Daughter Is Spotted

Most likely oblivious to the tragedy and drama that surrounds her, 3-year-old Zahara Tsarnaev was spotted playing in her grandparents’ front yard yesterday.

The daughter of deceased terrorist suspect was spotted enjoying time with her grandmother, Judith Russell, in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Russell watched carefully as Zahara flew down a slide, then grabbed her protectively in her arms.

The girl’s mother, Katherine Russell, has released a statement, but stayed away from media and cameras.
