A nice day to enjoy the outdoors turned deadly in Georgia, when a 14-year-old boy was hit and killed by a police patrol car.

Chandler Weems was struck by a police cruiser near his home in Henry County, Georgia, as he exited a driveway onto a main road. The teen was just feet away from neighbor Ron Jackson’s home in Henry County, when Jackson realized Weems had been hit. He ran outside when he heard the police officer rush to Weems’ aid and yelled for help.

“When I got to the front porch that’s when I saw the officer in the road,” said Jackson.

The patrol car was being driven by officer Denis Allyson Romano and was reportedly heading north to North Ola Road, but it is unclear where the car was coming from. Henry County police reportedly said the accident was unavoidable and Romano is extremely saddened by the teen’s death.

Bryce Hatmaker, Weem’s best friend, was reported saying the teen tried to stop his bike when Hatmaker warned him of the traffic on the main road, but it was too late.

There are no reports of a pending investigation.

Weems’ family released a statement on Facebook saying, “Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers. We are sad to say that Chandler passed away this morning around 9:30. Updates are to come regarding services. We appreciate privacy at this time. Please keep the family in your prayers.”

Our condolences to the family.
