Dylan Meehan and Brad Taylor, two seniors at Carmel High School in Putnam County, New York, have become the first gay people to be voted “cutest couple” in the school’s yearbook, and now they’re an internet sensation.
The duo’s best friend, Chelsea Blaney, is responsible both for their nomination and their newfound fame. Chelsea approached the school principal, Kevin Carroll, about allowing the boys to be entered into the running. And, after they won, she posted a picture [just this past Friday] of the two on her Tumblr, saying they won cutest couple. She then went from 15 likes to 7,000 in minutes.
Her blog and Taylor and Meehan’s picture have since been shared online more than 100,000 times. Taylor said he soon got a message from his cousin in Pennsylvania saying they were “Tumblr famous.” Other messages have poured in from around the world.
“I got comments from ‘They’re cute’ to ‘This has inspired me to come out to my parents,’” said Blaney, 18. “It’s mind-blowing.”
The experience has prompted Blaney to campaign on social media for her friends to appear on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show.
Taylor and Meehan have been together since June 14, after they were introduced by a friend and then went on a tour of Brown University together.
The two came out to their family and friends a week later.
Both agreed they have received nothing but love and support from everyone, allowing them to feel comfortable at home and school about being openly gay. There are only a handful of gay couples at Carmel High, they said, and most are girls.
In the fall, both Dylan and Brad will be attending NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, where they expect to study theater, business and the sciences. Both have 4.0 grade-point averages and have received scholarships to attend NYU.
Now if this isn’t just the best story we’ve heard in weeks.
Side note: How cute do they look in their tuxes at prom? [which took place earlier this week]
