If Sesame Street takes it there, that means the nation should be listening.

The educational children’s show that we all know and love has tacked some of the most controversial subjects. From AIDS to homosexuality and race, Sesame Street was always there to teach us about tolerance, acceptance, and most importantly…differences.

With so many fathers and mothers locked away, they thought it would be a good idea to debut an incarceration package on the show.

They know it’s a real issue that needs to be dealt with – nearly 2.7 million children are growing up with incarcerated parents.

The package, which consists of stories, tips and activities for caregivers and kids, is designed to act as “an educational outreach initiative for families with children (ages 3 – 8) who are coping with a parent’s incarceration,” the Sesame Workshop website explains.

Response has, obviously, been polarizing. While some love the idea, others are opposed, saying that this could teach preschoolers that prison is “normal,” or even that it should be accepted.

Whatever the case, count on Sesame Street to keep it all the way real.
