Serena Williams is making sure the apology she issued for her insensitive rape comments during a recent Rolling Stone interview really counts.

We told you yesterday about the “victim shaming” comments she made about the 16-year-old girl who was raped in Steubenville, Ohio by two football players.

And we also told you about that apology, where she said she was trying to reach out to the victim’s family to let them know she meant no harm. And, kudos to Serena, because that’s exactly what she did.

The tennis star, in England preparing for Wimbledon, spoke to the victim, her mother and a family lawyer for about 30 minutes Wednesday, the lawyer said.

“Serena was very nice, very sincere and it was a very well-received conversation among two women and a young lady,” attorney Bob Fitzsimmons said Thursday.

The victim’s family accepted Serena’s apology and even issued their own statement on Wednesday, saying that they were “proud” of the tennis star’s remarks.

“We are sure Serena has & will continue to use her God given talents to advance women’s equality and send the message that rape is never acceptable under any circumstance,” according to the statement released by Fitzsimmons.

“We are fans of Serena and will continue rooting for many more championships but more importantly watching her advance the cause of rape victims who are never to blame.”

We’re proud of you too, Serena. Way to make this one up. But…let’s just make sure victim shaming in any situation NEVER happens again.
