The man behind the leak of NSA documents about top-secret surveillance programs is now officially being charged.

According to the Washington Post, Edward Snowden has had a criminal complaint charged against him by federal prosecutors.

The U.S. has also asked Hong Kong to detain him on a provisional arrest warrant, according to U.S. officials.

The site reports:

Snowden was charged with theft, “unauthorized communication of national defense information” and “willful communication of classified communications intelligence information to an unauthorized person,” according to the complaint. The last two charges were brought under the 1917 Espionage Act.

Snowden fled to Hong Kong last month when news of the leak had come out, showing that people had access to information for the surveillance programs.

It wasn’t until June 9th that Snowden revealed himself as the whistleblower, and now, nearly a month later, he is being charged.
