Good news: Independence Day 2 is scheduled to come out Summer 2014.
Bad news: Will Smith won’t be in it.
Captain Steve Hiller won’t be reprising his role in the next film. According to director Roland Emmerich:
“Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much.”
Since the first film came out in 1996, Smith has played a lot of roles and starred in a lot of blockbuster movies. He’s kind of a big deal. The Independence Day sequel will star some of the actors from the first movie, but Emmerich says that there will be a lot of new actors as well.
It’s hard to say if the sequel will be as popular as the first movie, because Will Smith’s character was a favorite!
We’ll reserve judgment for now, but we’re already missing us some Will.
