With the protest of stop & frisk at an all time high, lawmakers have introduced a new technique of creating an outside watchdog group to help protect the streets while not violating anyone’s liberties.

Passed with more than enough votes to override expected vetoes, this new tactic has showed New York politicians that the voice of the people can ring louder.

“New Yorkers know that we can keep our city safe from crime and terrorism without profiling our neighbors,” Councilman Brad Lander, who spearheaded the measures with fellow Democratic Councilman Jumaane Williams, said at a packed and emotional meeting that began shortly before midnight and stretched into the early morning.

The meeting to address this new tactic began shortly before midnight and didn’t end until early this morning. Many critics of stop & frisk were present, including local politicians and the men that have been victims of it.

It’s no surprise that Mayor Bloomberg and police commissioner Ray Kelly are firm supporters of stop & frisk, with Bloomberg addressing gang members that needed to be searched and Kelly even adding that “al-Qaeda wannabes” needed to be as well.

However, the people have spoken. Stay tuned for more.
