UPDATE: 3:45 PM EST:

According to NBC, Teresa Heinz Kerry suffered a grand mal seizure that sent her to the hospital in critical condition.

The origin is unknown. But according to reports, Heinz Kerry is getting better.

The wife of Secretary of State John Kerry and heir to the ketchup company fortune was upgraded to fair condition Monday, the secretary’s spokesman said, and she continues to undergo evaluation.

Heinz Kerry, 74, was flown to Boston for further medical treatment after being taken by ambulance from the couple’s Nantucket, Mass., home to a hospital on Sunday afternoon, sources close to the family told NBC News.

Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of Secretary of State and presidential candidate John Kerry, was rushed from her vacation home in Nantucket to the hospital last night, due to an undisclosed illness.

After her condition was stabilized, she was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for care.

“She was brought in, in critical but stable condition, and that is currently how … her condition still remains,” Noah Brown, public information officer for Nantucket Cottage Hospital, said. “At this point, we are determining the next phase of her care, be that either in our facility on the island, or on the mainland.”

According to State Department spokesman Glen Johnson:

“Late Sunday afternoon, Mrs. Teresa Heinz Kerry was taken by ambulance to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, accompanied by her husband,” Johnson said in a prepared statement. “Once doctors had stabilized her condition, she was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, again accompanied by the Secretary.”

Heinz Kerry, a prominent philanthropist, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 and has since received radiation and surgery. She has spoken out about the importance of mammograms for early detection.
