Jennifer Lopez is back on the block, posted up fiercely in the August issue of W Magazine

But don’t let the glitz and glam fool you, W Magazine gives us the real J.Lo; an “old school, down to earth diva.”

Jennifer returned to her childhood home of the Bronx to shoot the cover for the magazine and took a trip down memory lane.

Check out the photos of a glamorous Jenny making her way back to the Bronx block in the Mario Sorrenti-lensed photos and excerpts from the interview below.

Jennifer on returning to her old neighborhood:

I was nervous coming here today. The last time I was in there was when my mom and dad called us home to tell us that they were separating after 33 years of marriage.

The hardworking mother opened up about moving out of her house when she was 18 and starting her career as Fly Girl on the hit show In Living Color.

I hated L.A. Now I love Los Angeles, but it doesn’t give me strength the way the Bronx did. All the strength that I needed for life, I got from that neighborhood. I didn’t want to go to college—I wanted to try dance full-time. I started sleeping on the sofa in the dance studio. I was homeless.

From her clothing line for Kohl’s to American Idol, J.Lo’s work ethic is admirable.

I think a lot about teaching my kids to work hard. I’ve learned something about kids—they don’t do what you say; they do what you do.

And of course the stunning cover:
