It looks like they don’t “always get away” with murder.

In the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict, a similar case nearly a thousand miles away has closed with very different results. The Milwaukee man who shot and killed his unarmed teen neighbor, Darius Simmons, last year will be spending a lifetime behind bars for the murder – with no chance of parole.

Only three months after Trayvon Martin was killed, John Henry Spooner, 76, approached 13-year-old Darius and accused him of taking weapons from his home. He shot the boy outside of his home and right in front of Darius’ mother. Police said they searched Darius’ home and didn’t find the weapons.

His defense lawyers claimed that he was mentally ill at the time of the shooting, but the prosecution, after showing video of the actual shooting, pointed out that it was deliberate. Last week, Spooner was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide after a short trial.

Darius’ mother, Patricia Larry, says justice was served when the jury rejected Spooner’s insanity plea. She still has a pending wrongful-death lawsuit against the shooter.

We’re also glad that justice was served. We wish Darius’ family the best. May he finally rest in peace.
