Let’s be honest, we live for ratchet moments in pop culture.
From questionable fashion choices, to crazy antics on reality television shows and funny moments in films, we can’t get enough ratchetness. And thankfully, celebs always keep us entertained with their hilarious behavior.
Although the word ratchet has just been placed into our pop culture lexicon, we can think back to a couple of scenarios in the ’90s that were certainly ratchet-worthy. We decided to take it back to moments in the ’90s that would be deemed ratchet today. Enjoy!
Mase and Diddy wear shiny suits in the “Mo Money Mo Problems” video. Everyone knows shiny suits are a no-go – but these two still swagged it out in the video…
Bad Boy Tupac goes HAM and says that he smashed Biggie’s wife Faith Evans in the song “Hit Em Up.” As we all know now, these two are responsible for the biggest feud in hip-hop history. After Tupac was shot in a NYC studio, he blamed it on Biggie. The two went at it until Tupac’s murder in 1996. That’s some Love & Hip-Hop ish.

Faith Evans discusses how she caught Lil Kim in her bed with Biggie in the ’90s. As we recall, Biggie stopped dealing with Lil Kim and later dated and married Faith Evans. Biggie cheated on Faith a couple times with Lil Kim and ever since, the two have despised each other.
Eminem claps back at Benzino for dissing him in The Source magazine. The beef started with Eminem being upset that Benzino only gave him 2 stars for his album The Marshall Mathers LP in his magazine The Source. Eminem later sounded off in a track about the rating and the two created diss tracks about the other, although Benzino wasn’t a seasoned rapper. Benzino was heavily criticized about the beef and later apologized.
Ruthie Alcaide from The Real World: Hawaii had a heavy drinking problem. She often got so wasted that she could not recount the events that happened the night before. The last straw came when Ruthie went on a drunken joy ride while being filmed! The producers told her to either get help or leave the show.
In the animated film Bebe’s Kids, Jamika drops Bebe’s kids home, but discovers that she neglects her children. The comedy was centered around a stand up comic named Robin, who approaches a woman named Jamika to ask her out on a date. Little did he know she not only had a kid, but she was babysitting her friend Bebe’s badass kids. It’s pure ratchetness in animated form!
Who could forget Master P‘s movement No Limit and his album covers? The No Limit movement was a big one with a big roster from Silkk Tha Shocker to Mystikal. The crew was always covered in ice and dominated the ’90s. Although the No Limit Soldiers were successful, they were known for having the worst album covers of all time – like laughably bad.
Controversial talk show Jerry Springer revealed guests’ darkest secrets. One man revealed that he was fooling around with multiple sisters, but was unable to remember the details. He also pimped out his brother’s girlfriend for bologna sandwiches. LMAO!
Lorena Bobbit chops off her husband’s penis after tiring of his cheating ways. She claimed that her husband John raped her and in fear, she decided to cut his tool off. Lorena was later found not guilty due to insanity causing an irresistible impulse to harm her husband.
John Wayne Bobbitt becomes a porn star after his penis was reattached! John claimed that his penis being severed improved his life, so much so, he took a chance in the porn industry and starred in John Wayne Bobbitt Uncut in 1994.
O.J. Simpson leads the LAPD in a high speed chase before his arrest for the murders of ex-wife Nicole Brown and friend Ron Goldman. Millions watched the chase as 20 police cars rushed to get the NFL player into custody. The chase ended after O.J. demanded to speak to his mother before surrendering.
Former President Bill Clinton gets impeached for his affair with Monica Lewinsky. Although Bill Clinton was a presidential favorite, it didn’t stop him from being kicked out of office. Monica Lewinsky was a White House intern who was later caught on tape with Bill discussing oral sex. He was impeached in 1998.
Halle Berry played Nisi in the movie BAPS and had the dream of opening the first combination soul food and hair salon. Everyone has a dream and Nisi would stop at nothing to have her own business. To get the startup money, Nisi auditions with her friend Mickey for a music video. Through a turn of events they end up assisting a Beverly Hills butler and caring for a millionaire, becoming Black American Princesses!
Marlon Wayans plays the hilarious character Loc Dog in Don’t Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Juice In The Hood. Loc Dog is a psychotic street dude who has to teach his cousin Ashtray (played by Shawn Wayans) the ins and outs of street life.
So you see, the ’90s invented the word ratchet!
