A woman on a first date fell to her death when the balcony railing of her 17th floor NYC apartment collapsed.

Ad executive Jennifer Rosoff, 35, was having a cigarette with her date on the balcony, and against her date’s advice, she leaned or sat on the railing. That’s when it gave way.

“…She apparently fell backward and landed on construction scaffolding at the first floor,” authorities said. Police spoke to the man and no foul play was suspected.

Her date said he heard two loud pops before the rail collapsed. Emergency crews pronounced Rosoff dead at the scene. The medical examiner will determine a cause of death.

Now, building officials are examining part of the broken railing to see how it could have snapped. They plan to determine whether the other balconies in the pre-World War II building are structurally sound.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Rosoff’s family at this time.
