Ted Nugent, the 80’s rocker appeared on a talk radio show in Maine on Saturday and said that Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17 year old Florida teen who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, deserved his fate.
Nugent referred to Martin as a “gangsta wannabe,” who had a “blood thirst,” as evidenced by the fact that he was supposedly eager to “get into fights with people.”
Nugent also responded to his critics, who unleashed a wave of criticism after his initial remarks about Trayvon and race in an op=ed piece he wrote immediately after ZImmerman was acquitted. He calls a group of New Haven Connecticut protesters, “sub-human numb nuts” . The group began circulating a petition calling on the venue for one of the rocker’s upcoming shows to cancel the gig.
A protest is planned outside the venue if the concert does take place on Tuesday as scheduled. Bangor Daily News reports:
Barbara Fair, a West Haven resident heavily involved in the petition drive, said she first became aware of the show after her daughter told her about comments Nugent had made regarding Martin.
While Fair said Nugent has the right to free speech, “he has to agree that we have a right to protest.”
The musician also stated Zimmerman got only a “sliver of justice.”
The site adds:
“It pains me deeply” to have to acknowledge that the president and some others in the administration are “just bad people,” Nugent said. He said he had hoped to be able to speak better of the country’s top officials.
SMFH. It’s clear there is much work to be done and we must continue to fight for justice for Trayvon.
