Today, (August 5) marks Marilyn Monroe‘s 51st death anniversary.

There is no doubt the blonde-bombshell was known for her beauty and talent, from starring in stellar roles in films such as Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She definitely proved she was more than just a pretty face.

Although the movie star’s looks are something most of us frequently remember her for, Marilyn’s influence and legacy has made about every “it” pop-icon of the last two-decades want to imitate her, from Madonna to Gwen Stefani and Lady Gaga. Actress Michelle Williams even paid homage to the late actress, starring in My Week With Marilyn in 2011.

Sure, Marilyn had a ton of good looks; from her amazing figure to her rich gold blonde hair, but she also had some  wisdom to share with us. Thus, here at GlobalGrind we’ve decided to compile a list of 10 of the most memorable quotes Marilyn shared with the world while she was still alive.

Scroll down for our listing below:

“Being a sex symbol is a heavy load to carry, especially when one is tired, hurt and bewildered.”

“A wise girl kisses, but doesn’t love, listens but doesn’t believe, and leaves before she is left.”

“Hollywood is a place where they’ll pay you a $1,000 for a kiss and 50¢ for your soul.”

“Success makes so many people hate you. I wish it wasn’t that way. It would be wonderful to enjoy success without seeing envy in the eyes of those around you.”

“Men who think that a woman’s past love affairs lessen her love for them are usually stupid and weak.”

“A career is wonderful, but you can’t curl up with it on a cold night.”

“I’m selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I’m out of control, and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.”

“I have too many fantasies to be a housewife. I guess I am a fantasy.”

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, You believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, And sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”

“I knew I belonged to the public and to the world, not because I was talented or even beautiful, But because I had never belonged to anything or anyone else.”
