For the last two months or so, one of the most popular hashtags on Twitter and Instagram has been #Smackcam.
So what is it?
Well, it’s exactly how it sounds. Basically, young men and women smack another unsuspecting person. Of course they try to catch the incident on camera and then they upload it online.
The phenomenon started a couple of months ago when notable Vine and Twitter user Max Jr. started smacking people in his inner circle.
In a interview with Complex, Max said:
“My cousin gave me the idea about smacking people for Vine, but I wasn’t too sure if I wanted to do it. . .Evidently I ended up smacking people and it became a huge hit. I held a Smack Cam competition about two weeks ago and I got over hundreds of posts. That’s when I really realized how big Smack Cam became.”

Max has posted a ton of #Smackcam videos where he hits unsuspecting people, ranging from one of his pals, to his father:

Often #Smackcam involves smackers using some kind of substance on their hand, whether it’s lotion, baby powder or soap:
#Smackcam becomes very ugly because some of the victims have been young girls. One of the more retweeted Vines features a boy smacking his little sister, waking her up from her sleep in the process:
Young children have been doing #Smackcam, which is another problem:
Using your bare hands hasn’t been enough; kids are now using various objects (like milk) which is really dangerous:
