Since a federal judge deemed the controversial NYPD Stop-and-Frisk practice unconstitutional, those who have been targeted are rejoicing, but others who advocate for it aren’t too happy.
Which is ridiculous, being that the judge didn’t say the NYPD had to stop the 11-year-old program. She did, however, suggest they do it differently to avoid the racist profiling and violating human rights.
But Mayor Michael Bloomberg is still all butt hurt about it and decided to appeal the decision, claiming the discriminatory practice of detaining the city’s residents based on their skin color didn’t get “a fair trial.”
We’re guessing the 90 percent of innocent people who are stopped got a fair chance?
Anyway, as is their nature, The Daily Show tackled Stop-and-Frisk in the most hilarious but insightful way. First, host John Oliver offered this analogy for folks who couldn’t understand why the practice is such a big deal.
“You know how we feel at the airport, when the TSA is patting us down, unnecessarily delaying us, looking for weapons we obviously don’t have? Well, imagine your entire neighborhood is Terminal B at LaGuardia, and the TSA agents sometimes talk to you like this: “Um, boarding pass please and what the fuck are you looking at?”
Then, in only the way The Daily Show can do, they presented a news report by correspondent Jessica Williams as she took to the streets in one of NYC’s most dangerous neighborhoods – Wall Street.
“The White Bronx! Business Harlem! And frankly John, I don’t feel safe here and I would like to see the police do their freaking job and start stopping people down here…just people you suspect of being white collar criminals, you know, walking around in tailored suits, slicked back hair, always needs sunscreen if you know what I’m saying….If you don’t want to be associated with white collar crime, maybe you shouldn’t dress that way…BOOM! I said it…”
Now watch the irony and hilarity ensue:
