Though Cory Monteith is no longer with us, he lives on through his work on television and in movies. One of his final roles before his death hit close to home; the 31-year-old landed a role playing a drug-addict in McCanick.

Just a month after he was found dead in his Vancouver hotel room, the trailer for the Canadian film has arrived. McCanick will premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and stars Cory as Simon Weeks, a criminal with a serious drug habit. Simon is released from prison and hunted down by a narcotics detective who is harboring a secret only he has the ability to expose.

After the tragic news that Cory, who had reportedly been in recovery from life-long drug abuse problems, passed from a deadly combination of heroin and alcohol, the film’s subject matter hit closer to home than ever before. Director John C. Waller decided to go ahead with plans to release the film in the wake of Cory’s death.

“Cory was very vocal about his past and he wanted to tap into things from his youth that he hadn’t been able to use as an actor yet,” Waller said.

Regardless, fans and loved ones may struggle to watch the film.

McCanick isn’t the only movie Cory will posthumously star in. A second film called All the Wrong Reasons will also premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. In the movie, the late star plays a store manager whose wife is struggling with PTSD.

The movie also stars Kevin Zegers, who recently spoke about his costar’s death:

“It was a heavy and weird month. Cory was the nicest man I knew.”

Cory also leaves behind a lead role on the hit series Glee. Fox chief Kevin Reilly says that Monteith will be written out of the show in the third episode.

“That episode will deal directly with the incidents involved with Cory’s passing and the drug abuse in particular,” he said.

May Cory rest in peace.
