A teenage girl in Colorado is dead after the prank she tried to pull on her friend turned deadly.
Premila Lal, 18, had been hiding in a closet in order to scare her friend, 21-year-old Nerrek Daniel Galley. But when she jumped out to startle him, he shot the teenager, mistaking her for an intruder.
“The closet opened and I think she jumped and screamed, and he thought it was an intruder inside the closet, so that’s when he pulled the trigger,” Lal’s father Praveen Lal told CBS Denver.
Galley, Lal’s brother and her cousin carried her to a car and drove her to the hospital after realizing what had just taken place. However, she died shortly after arriving.
As for Galley, he was arrested for actions unrelated to the shooting, including suspected child abuse, reckless endangerment and permitting a juvenile to have a firearm.
Police are calling Lal’s death “unintended and extremely tragic.”
